That created a large and sudden demand for Windows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/remote-desktop-service-rds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Remote Desktop Services (RDS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But as we expected, IT service providers and their clients weren\u2019t the only ones aware of this shift. Remote attacks against RDS servers spiked almost the moment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/kaspersky-rdp-brute-force-attacks-have-gone-up-since-start-of-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lockdowns went into effect<\/a> across North America. Providers need to be extra vigilant deploying their remote work solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have clients asking about new RDS service? Let\u2019s talk security for Remote Desktop Services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS)?<\/h2>\n<p>Formerly named Windows Terminal Server, Windows Remote Desktop Services allows you to give users remote access to either a full desktop environment or just a single application. Unlike with host-based virtual desktop technologies, RDS allows multiple simultaneous connections to the same server.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are both pros and cons to having RDS \u201cdesktop\u201d environments and apps run as user interfaces on a Windows Server OS. Since it utilizes shared server infrastructure, RDS is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/remote-desktop-service-rds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very resource-efficient platform<\/a>. Also, since they\u2019re not actually desktop OSes, you can easily limit administrator rights inside RDS sessions to prevent compromises. On the other hand, since RDS sessions aren\u2019t actually running a desktop OS, some specialized applications may not be usable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Is RDS secure?<\/h2>\n<p>Without good security for Remote Desktop Services, out of the box RDS servers can be vulnerable to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Man-in-the Middle (MiTM) attacks<\/li>\n<li>Denial of Service (DOS) attacks<\/li>\n<li>Password Hash Dumping<\/li>\n<li>Ransomware attacks<\/li>\n<li>Brute-Force attacks<\/li>\n<li>Keylogging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So it is vital that you apply good security practices to any RDS server you stand up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Five best practices for securing RDS<\/h2>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server\/remote\/remote-desktop-services\/Welcome-to-rds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many different ways<\/a> you can provision RDS systems, which can at first make security for Remote Desktop Services appear complicated. But no matter how you\u2019re deploying it, there are a few fundamental precautions you\u2019ll always want to take.<\/p>\n<h3>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Enforce strong password policies<\/h3>\n<p>As with user management in any Windows environment it&#8217;s important to require strong passwords. Don\u2019t write off RDS sessions as lesser concerns than full server or desktop OSes. RDS servers are still potential entry points for attackers to breach your network. Enforce password length, complexity, age, and history policies on all accounts in your RDS user groups.<\/p>\n<h3>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Require multi-factor authentication (MFA)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/security\/why-you-should-enable-multi-factor-authentication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Multi-factor authentication<\/a> is a highly reliable method for preventing brute-force attacks, as well as for reducing the effectiveness of keylogging and password hash dumps. <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/active-directory\/authentication\/howto-mfa-nps-extension-rdg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RDS supports MFA<\/a> via a number of different methods, including SMS text challenge and mobile app authentication.<\/p>\n<h3>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have strong vulnerability &amp; patch management<\/h3>\n<p>RDS servers are high value targets for attackers. Because they need to be available to outside connections, it&#8217;s critical that you enforce good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/it-advisor-and-network-operations-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vulnerability and patch management<\/a> to keep them secure.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your clients\u2019 RDS servers on a monthly patching cycle, preferably with planned downtime for rebooting and post-patching log assessment to determine if there were any issues. Make sure you have a reliable patch rollback plan for these servers too. Rollback plans designed to maintain uptime are especially important now that remote desktop service has become much more critical to the work of so many businesses.<\/p>\n<h3>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use secure connections<\/h3>\n<p>RDS runs on the Remote Desktop Protocol (Port 3389). Unfortunately, attackers are very familiar with port 3389. It is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/securitytrails.com\/blog\/top-scanned-ports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most commonly scanned open ports<\/a> on the internet. We recommend either deploying an SSL-secured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/remote-desktop-service-rds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remote desktop Gateway<\/a> or establishing VPN secure tunnels for all connections to your RDS servers. This will help prevent Man-in-the-Middle attacks and ensure good data security.<\/p>\n<h3>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Restrict user access<\/h3>\n<p>Adopt the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/security\/zero-trust-security-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">principle of least privilege<\/a> when provisioning user accounts for RDS. Set an account lockout policy to limit the opportunity for brute force attacks to succeed. If the attacker is stalled by a strong lockout policy they\u2019re likely to go looking for a different, more vulnerable target.<\/p>\n<p>Remove all unnecessary administrator rights and other elevated privileges on RDS user accounts. This helps prevent attackers from moving laterally across your network with elevated privileges if they are able to compromise your RDS server.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Use RDS to manage cloud services for clients<\/h2>\n<p>We don\u2019t recommend provisioning administrator access to your client\u2019s end users in RDS without a critical business need. However, if you\u2019ve put proper security for Remote Desktop Services in place, IT service providers can use RDS connections to streamline many of their own administrative tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Connecting via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/azure-remote-desktop-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RDS to an Azure or on-premise server<\/a> is an efficient way to handle tasks best performed through a GUI rather than in PowerShell or through another type of remote connection. Fortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/cloud\/azure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure<\/a> offers some useful tools for securing RDS connections in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherweb.com\/blog\/cloud-server\/iaas-azure-security-center-protect-your-workloads-data-and-users-in-a-cloud-first-mobile-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure Security Center<\/a>, such as Azure Policies and Network Security Groups.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, using Azure to host your RDS servers not only simplifies management, it allows you to easily scale your remote desktop and app services as demand changes. Does one of your clients need to unexpectedly close an office for quarantine and go remote for a month? Is another client bringing all of their remote workers back on site? Scale their RDS service up or down on a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n<p>You can also automatically handle access requests at a moment\u2019s notice too. Azure supports Just in Time (JIT) access authorization, so users can easily receive one-off access to RDS sessions and other servers, access which goes away as soon as the connection closes. You can set your RDS server to block all inbound connections, with only select ports opening when a user successfully makes a JIT request.<\/p>\n<p>Requests are logged for tracking and accountability. You can manage how they\u2019re authorized. The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/security-center\/security-center-just-in-time?tabs=jit-config-asc%2Cjit-request-asc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure Security Center<\/a> gives you granular control over how your virtual servers and individual services, like RDS, accept JIT access requests.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Looking for an Azure alternative?
